What licensing means

Personal listening and media use are different.

Buying a CD, digital album, or WAV download gives you a copy of the music for personal listening. It does not automatically give permission to place the music in a video, advertisement, podcast, public production, livestream, broadcast, monetized channel, or commercial project.

For public, commercial, broadcast, promotional, or media use, please request permission first so the correct rights and terms can be confirmed in writing.

Sync licensing

Using music with picture.

Synchronization licensing, often shortened to sync licensing, is permission to pair music with visual media. This can include film, television, advertising, corporate videos, YouTube videos, trailers, games, social media videos, and other productions where music supports moving images.

Because a project may involve both the underlying composition and a specific recording, direct licensing requests are reviewed individually.

Direct licensing

What can usually be handled directly.

Direct licensing may be available for music where Jamie Penner controls the necessary rights. For original Jamie Penner compositions and recordings, direct sync and master-use licensing requests can usually be reviewed directly.

For cover songs or recordings of compositions written by others, Jamie may control his own recording, but he may not control the underlying song or composition. In those cases, additional permission may be required from the original songwriter, publisher, administrator, or another rights holder before the music can be used in film, television, advertising, online video, games, podcasts, or other media.

A license is not granted unless all required rights have been cleared in writing. Jamie Penner Music can only review and approve rights it controls.

Sync licensing

Permission to synchronize music with visual media such as film, TV, video, advertising, games, trailers, or branded content.

Master-use licensing

Permission to use a specific Jamie Penner recording or released master in a production, subject to approval, written terms, and any additional composition clearance required where the song was written by another songwriter.

Commercial / advertising use

Use in content that promotes a product, service, company, campaign, event, or brand, including sponsored and monetized online media.

YouTube / social video use

Use in public online videos, social media, reels, livestreams, Vimeo uploads, or YouTube content where permission and usage terms need to be documented.

Podcast / recurring content use

Use as a podcast theme, intro, outro, bumper, music bed, or recurring element across episodes, platforms, or campaigns.

Custom edits or alternate lengths

Requests for a shorter edit, loop, sting, underscore section, alternate version, or project-specific adaptation where available.

Other licensing paths

When other music licenses may apply.

Some uses are normally handled through rights organizations, platforms, broadcasters, distributors, publishers, agencies, or business-music licensing services rather than through a simple direct website inquiry.

This can include venue and business background music, public performance tariffs, broadcaster blanket licensing, streaming-platform use, mechanical/reproduction licensing, cover-song reproduction, cover-song sync clearance, and some post-sync or audiovisual royalty situations.

Examples of other sources

Depending on the use, the correct path may involve organizations such as SOCAN, Re:Sound, CMRRA, Entandem, distributors, broadcasters, music libraries, sync agencies, platforms, or another territory-specific rights organization.

A direct license from Jamie may still be appropriate for rights he controls, such as his own original composition and/or his own master recording. It should not be assumed to replace third-party publisher approval, cover-song composition clearance, society licensing, platform requirements, tariffs, reporting obligations, or any rights held by others.

Common licensing distinctions

Public performance / business use

Music played publicly in a business, venue, event, restaurant, store, office, or public space may involve public-performance licensing through rights organizations or business-music licensing services.

Broadcast / platform use

Radio, television, streaming, and platform uses may involve blanket licenses, cue sheets, royalty reporting, performance rights, neighbouring rights, or post-sync administration depending on the territory and outlet.

Mechanical / reproduction licensing

Reproducing musical works on physical or digital sound carriers, distributing cover versions, or handling platform-level reproductions may require mechanical or reproduction licensing.

Catalogue pitching / agency licensing

Some productions prefer music libraries, sync agents, publishers, or agencies because they manage clearance, pitching, paperwork, and buyer relationships at scale.

These summaries are for orientation only. Rights requirements vary by territory, platform, project type, broadcaster, venue, and distribution method.

Music fit

Cinematic • ambient • blues-rock • guitar-based • instrumental • atmospheric • seasonal material where applicable.

Quick answer

Can I use Jamie Penner music in a video, film, podcast, ad, or game?

Some Jamie Penner music may be available for direct sync or master-use licensing. Buying a CD, WAV album, or single does not grant media-use rights. Licensing must be approved in writing before the music is used in public, commercial, broadcast, monetized, podcast, advertising, social-media, or recurring content.

Rights answer

What about cover songs or third-party compositions?

Jamie Penner Music can only review and approve rights it controls. If a track is a cover song or includes a composition written by another songwriter, additional clearance may be required from the songwriter, publisher, administrator, or another rights holder.
