About Something a Little Different
As the title suggests, Something a Little Different is a collection of songs that step outside Jamie Penner’s usual musical territory—and often differ just as much from one another. The album moves freely between guitar-driven instrumental rock, synthesizer-based experimentation, atmospheric compositions, vocal rock, and pieces created simply to explore an unfamiliar direction.
That same philosophy carries into the cover artwork. The deliberately unusual scene is a composite containing more than 35 visual Easter eggs connected to different parts of Penner’s life, both past and present. Some will be immediately recognizable to the people who share the stories behind them; others may remain hidden to everyone except those connected to each item.
The album opens with an instrumental interpretation of Prism’s “Spaceship Superstar,” the song that made Penner want to create music when he heard it at age 12. “Here I Go Again” and “I Don’t Care,” both written more than 30 years earlier, feature vocals by James Vickers, who completed both performances in a single one-hour studio session.
Elsewhere, “Causing Interference” leans further into synthesizers and ends with the voice of Penner’s granddaughter Autumn. “Waiting for a Friend” reflects on friendships that quietly disappear, while “Walking in the Mist” was written as a deliberate challenge to move beyond Penner’s usual compositional style.

Inside the tracks
01Spaceship Superstar
An instrumental interpretation of the song originally recorded by Canadian rock group Prism. Hearing it at age 12 was the moment that made Jamie Penner want to play and create music rather than only listen to it; the signature “solar-powered laser beam guitar” line is recreated through a synthesizer vocoder.
02Route 66
An original instrumental inspired by Penner’s lifelong fascination with Route 66. Driving as much of the historic highway as possible remains one of the journeys he hopes to make.
03Causing Interference
A playful composition that ventures further into synthesizer-driven territory than much of Penner’s earlier music. The voice heard during the final moments belongs to his granddaughter Autumn, who inspired the title “Autumn Rose” on Out of Curiosity.
04Move Over
A compact instrumental built around the album’s willingness to move between styles without remaining in one musical lane.
05Lorem Ipsum
One of the album’s more playful and unconventional pieces, reflecting the experimental character behind the title Something a Little Different.
06The Chaos Construct
A composition whose title and character fit naturally within an album built from contrasts, unusual ideas, and deliberately varied musical directions.

08Here I Go Again (featuring James Vickers)
Written by Penner more than 30 years before it was recorded, the song spent decades sitting quietly in a notebook. James Vickers later provided the vocal performance during a remarkable one-hour session in which he completed both featured tracks for the album.
09I Don’t Care (featuring James Vickers)
Like “Here I Go Again,” this song was written more than three decades before finally being recorded. Vickers supplied the vocals, helping transform a long-shelved composition into one of the album’s most successful tracks for streaming and radio airplay.
10Waiting for a Friend
A reflection on friendships that gradually disappear—whether through distance, changing lives, or people simply growing apart.
11Walking in the Mist
Written as a deliberate challenge to move as far as possible from Penner’s usual compositional style. The process was an experiment in doing something unfamiliar purely for the enjoyment of it.
